The Next Growth Area : From Merauke To Marrakech

When you look at the area on the map below, what are your first impressions? The most likely is aridity. This is an area of almost half the earth, which is inhabited by the majority of Muslims in 57 countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), from Merauke (Indonesia) in the southeast to Marrakech (Morocco) in the northwest.

This region which controls 2/3 of the world’s oil and gas reserves, ironically, around 25% of its population, which is almost 2 billion people, live below the poverty line. What caused it? In general, the so-called Human Development Index (HDI) is low.

But I see it is in this region that world economic growth will be concentrated in the next 3 decades. There are 5 factors that will drive it:

The first is the era of SDG 2030 and Net Zero 2050 will encourage the world to reduce its dependence on fossils such as oil and gas. The fossil economy tends to prosper only a few and impoverish the rest. In the era of Net-Zero especially, carbon removal will become a new economy that has enormous value, and one that is considered as carbon removal is planting trees in previously arid areas.

Second, information technology and access to science and technology are increasingly equitable, which will accelerate the increase in HDI throughout the world.

Third is the development of high-tech agriculture which has made it possible to grow even in the desert. Our technology which we call Liquid Nano Clay (LNC) for example, has made this possible.

Fourth is the existence of plant species that can grow well throughout the earth which was originally arid and even died, growing even in salt water, both in tropical and subtropical countries. One of our favorites is Tamanu or Calophyllum inophyllum. It is a version of renewable resources to replace all types of resources that have been from fossils.

The fifth is what we call spiritual resources. There are answers to all the problems of life in the Qur’an, even for this super modern society. Once the Qur’an is fully mastered, there will be a civilizational leap that will occur as in the past centuries. What is relevant for this era, for example, is how to revive a dead earth (Surah 36:33), What is a substitute for fossil energy (Surah 36:80; 56:71–73) and so on.
