The effort to achieve Net-Zero 2050 can be done by a combination of two approaches called Do the Best and Remove the Rest.

Do the Best means to suppress activities that pollute the air with CO2 emissions or the equivalent of CO2, as much as possible. Use of electric vehicles, biofuels, solar energy etc. fall into this category.

However, no matter how hard we try to do the best, until the middle of this century at least, there will still be many of our activities that emit massive CO2. Among them is that we will not be able to separate from coal for power generation, airplanes and ships will still depend on liquid fuel, some of which are still fossil fuels.

So the CO2 emissions that are still to come out to the air, is the ones that must be removed. There are also two ways to do this, namely by technological solutions and by planting trees. It is these two ways of removing CO2 that through our Green Waqf project we introduce what we call Carbon Removal and Exchange (CareX).

The first way is by planting tamanu trees on our critical lands, there are 14 million hectares in Indonesia, 40% of which are suitable for tamanu. The seeds of this tamanu fruit are ideal for sustainable biofuel production, not competing with food nor agricultural land.

However, this land will also run out in time, so the second method must also be developed. What we have started is the development of technology for cryogenic-based carbon capture by utilizing industrial waste heat. The CO2 captured by this technology is then used to grow microalgae for fuel, food and feed.

The two solutions for planting tamanu trees and carbon capture technology, God willing, can be an ideal Do the Best and Remove the Rest effort to protect our earth together.
