Bio-Hydrogen: Giant Energy in the Eyelids
A very large source of new and renewable energy (NRE) is in our eyes. Namely from various types of waste, ranging from agricultural, urban, industrial waste up to household waste.
Only our mindset has been focused on electricity, because it is a form of energy that we can immediately use. Even though the efficiency of conversion of waste to electricity is only able to utilize about 30% of the potential energy stored in the waste.
Actually, there are other opportunities to take the energy stored in the waste more efficiently — it can be above 50%, which is among others to make it Bio-Hydrogen. BioH2 is a very clean energy because the combustion waste is in the form of water. It also stores enormous amounts of energy, about 2.8 times more than the energy stored in fossil fuels per unit of weight.
The production process is also not as complicated as most people imagine, it doesn’t even require the caliber of a rocket scientist to do it! With a reactor like the one in the photo below, which we built a few years ago, for example, this is enough to complete 4/5 of the BioH2 production steps.
The result of this reactor is clean syngas, the main contents are CO, H2, CO2 and CH4. There is only one step left to become BioH2, which is to separate H2 from other gaseous elements. This can be done through cryogenic distillation or using membranes that many researchers have developed recently, even buying ready-made membrane is also possible.
So why bother to produce BioH2, when there are no common vehicles that can use it? It doesn’t have to be for vehicles like the ones we use now, it can be for fuel-cell vehicles for very clean public transportation, for example, for raw materials or energy sources for various industries, and what’s on the eyelids is also for hydrotreatment or deoxygenation processes in the production process of drop-in biofuel, especially if the raw material we use is Bio-oil from waste as well.
